Routings enable you to plan the production of materials (products). Therefore, routings are used as a template for production orders and run schedules as well as as a basis for product costing.
This component can be used for production planning and control in a repetitive manufacturingenvironment. You can use repetitive manufacturing as either make-to-stock REM or make-to-order REM suchas in the automotive industry, for example. The goals of repetitive manufacturing are the following: Creation and revision of production quantities on a period and quantity basis (reductionin individual lot and order-specific processing). Reduction in the production control effort and simpler backflushing tools(with the optionof using the full scope of the PP functionality).
Unlike machines and fixed assets, production resources and tools (PRTs) are movable (notstationary) operating resources that are required to perform an activity and can be usedrepeatedly. For example, PRTs include documents, engineering drawings, jigs and fixtures, andmeasurement instruments. You can assign production resources/tools to internal and external activities. You use theassignment to determine: The quantity The operating time The datesof the PRTs required to carry out the activity. There are several categories of production resources and tools in the R/3 System. The categorydetermines the characteristics and business functions that a PRT can have.
