The important thing is to react quickly to customers'requirements.The customer determines the features of the product. A customer buying a car, for example, canchoose the features of the car and combine these features as required.The product configurator improves information exchange between sales, engineering, andproduction. Variant configuration helps the customer or salesperson to put together specificationsfor the product and ensure that the product can be produced from these specifications. It alsoensures that production costs do not overstep the mark.

The Supplier Workplace (SWP) allows suppliers (vendors) access to a manufacturers’(customers’) SAP System. The E-Commerce application serves as an alternative orenhancement to the EDI communication that is used in material procurement. That does notmean, however, that the Web application should completely replace the electronic exchange ofimportant trade documents using EDI. It is a cost-saving means for even small suppliers to enterinto competition in the supplier market. This Internet technology makes it possible for suppliers toaccess information in a customer’s system and to enter shipping notifications, without time delay.E-commerce is also a cost-saving and time-saving procedure for the customer with regard topurchasing raw materials, parts or systems. It saves time for getting information, telephone costsand costs for the connection and maintenance of an EDI line. When new suppliers enter themarket, the range of products on offer is broadened and competition is encouraged. As a result,the products can become cheaper for the manufacturer in the long term.

With this role, the vendor can check the settlement status, that is the updated quantities orsettled values, of the supplying company’s deliveries in the customer’s system and monitor priceagreements and goods receipts.Activities in Materials Management
