The SAP components all handle settlement of business objects using the same settlement logic.During settlement, some or all of the plan or actual costs incurred on an object are allocated toone or more receivers. The system automatically generates offsetting entries to credit the senderobject. The debit postings assigned once to a sender object remain in place, even aftersettlement to a receiver (and can therefore be displayed). The costs settled are updated on thecorresponding receiver object and displayed in reporting.
Profitability Analysis (CO-PA) enables you to evaluate market segments, which can be classifiedaccording to products, customers, orders or any combination of these, or strategic businessunits, such as sales organizations or business areas, with respect to your company's profit orcontribution margin. The aim of the system is to provide your sales, marketing, product management and corporateplanning departments with information to support internal accounting and decision-making.Two forms of Profitability Analysis are supported: costing-based and account-based. Costing-based Profitability Analysis is the form of profitability analysis that groups costs andrevenues according to value fields and costing-based valuation approaches, both of whichyou can define yourself. It guarantees you access at all times to a complete, short-termprofitability report. Account-based Profitability Analysis is a form of profitability analysis organized in accountsand using an account-based valuation approach. The distinguishing characteristic of thisform is its use of cost and revenue elements. It provides you with a profitability report that ispermanently reconciled with financial accounting. You can also use both of these types of CO-PA simultaneously.
Profit Center Accounting (EC-PCA) lets you determine profits and losses by profit center usingeither period accounting or the cost-of-sales approach. It also lets you analyze fixed capital andso-called “statistical key figures” (number of employees, square meters, and so on) by profitcenter. Consequently, you can calculate all the key figures commonly used in cost accounting(return on investment, cash flow, sales per employee, and so on).A profit center is a management-oriented organizational unit used for internal controllingpurposes. Dividing your company up into profit centers allows you to analyze areas ofresponsibility and to delegate responsibility to decentralized units, thus treating them as“companies within the company”.
